Insomnia Treatment

At some point in your life, you are going to have a sleepless night. This could be due to several things. Maybe you have a lot on your mind or you are too stressed out. Sometimes you could have heartburn or too much caffeine. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep a lot, then you could be suffering from insomnia. This is a problem that does not occur as frequently as many people think. On top of that, most people think that insomnia just refers to the inability to fall asleep. However, that is not the case either. Insomnia just refers to the quality of sleep that you are getting. Some people can sleep all night and not get good sleep. These people are still suffering from insomnia. The reason why we associate not sleeping with insomnia is that if you are not sleeping, then your quality of sleep would, of course, be very low. One major cause of insomnia is sleep apnea, which is a pause irregularity in breathing during sleep.

Prevalence

So what kind of people get insomnia? Anyone can get insomnia. It can happen to people of all ages and all races. It can also happen to both males and females. The average amount of sleep that people get every night is 7 and half hours. Other people can get as little as five hours of sleep and be fine. Some people need ten hours of sleep to be happy. Thus, it is hard to label someone with insomnia based on the number of hours that they sleep. You have to base it on the quality of their sleep.

Symptoms

Insomnia causes can vary a lot, but what does not vary are the symptoms. That is why it is pretty easy to spot a person that is suffering from insomnia. Do keep in mind that these symptoms have to keep showing up on a routine basis to count as insomnia. Just having it a few nights in a row does not count. The normal symptoms would be things like having difficulty falling asleep. Some people will wake up in the middle of the night, or wake up too early.  Another way that you can tell is if the person has a lot of daytime fatigue or sleepiness. This includes when the person is being active and not just sitting around. Also, people that have insomnia are going to have a lot of daytime irritability.

Diagnosis

To be diagnosed with insomnia, the doctor is going to have to know about your sleep habits. The doctor may ask you to keep a sleep diary, as well as stats on how you feel during the day for a week. This will be able to help the doctor diagnose any problem that you are having.

Treatment

Finding an insomnia treatment can be hard. That is because there are so many different causes that can bring about insomnia. One of the best things that you can do is to have behavioral therapy. This will teach you new ways to sleep and ways to make a better sleeping environment. You would be shocked to find out how many of our bedrooms are not set up to be good sleeping environments. Other times, this behavioral therapy will need to be paired with medications. Of course, it is important to not count on medication too often. Taking too much medication can make you dependent on the pills themselves. This is a bad habit to fall into.

Additionally, stress can be a factor that causes insomnia. Relieving stress can be very helpful in terms of helping to alleviate insomnia. Yoga, meditation, and physical workouts have all been cited by people as helpful activities to reduce insomnia.

Home Remedies

If you do not want to use an insomnia treatment that uses medication, then you are in luck. There are a lot of insomnia home remedies that you can try. All of these home remedies for insomnia are going to be based on sticking to a bedtime schedule. If you keep going to bed at the same time every night, you will see that it is a lot easier to fall asleep. Also, keep in mind that you need to avoid trying to fall asleep. You should always try to watch TV or something until you become drowsy. From there, you can move to your bed and go to sleep. It is also very important to hide your bedtime clocks. Sometimes people spend too much time trying to figure out how much sleep they are getting if they go to sleep right then. Most of us have played the game where we say, “If I go to bed now, I will get 6 hours of sleep.” Then when you do not fall asleep it starts all over again, but this time you say, “Ok, if I go to bed now, then I will get 5 hours of sleep.” Then this just keeps going on.

Conclusion

As you can see, insomnia does not have to be hard to deal with. People are always coming up with new home remedies for insomnia, so be sure to keep your eyes open. You do not have to live with another sleepless night.
